Human perception changes with the
continual existence of humanity. With these changes in perceptions came
the “decaying” of the aura.
• Aura: “that which withers in the age of mechanical reproduction is the aura of the work of art (21).”
• The natural aura is the most “distant” (experiencing first-hand the shadow of a mountain).
o By filming or photographing the mountains one is seeing them only secondary and not experiencing their aura.
• Film only takes away from our supposed “realities” and constructs alternate ones.

IV – Traditional Art: Ritual Value
Though true art may be replicable, it is also inseparable from tradition. As soon as the authenticity is lost, art’s function is transformed.
• Art is changeable:
o One may see a work of art as ominous or disturbing
o One may see a work of art as a beautiful, religious idol.
• Art was originally “used” for ritual and religious purposes, but is now designed solely on its ability to be reproduced (photo negatives are not based on ritual).
